Worship in the Book Of Revelation

Few books of the Bible hold as much mystery and fascination as does Revelation. It is filled with incredible images of beasts and dragons and fire and earthquakes and plagues and armies and frogs and cities and falling stars and so forth.

And yet, amid all the drama, the theme that repeatedly appears is worship. Whether dealing with the final crisis regarding those who worship the beast and its image, or revealing beings in heaven who sing praises to God, Revelation comes back again and again to worship: worship of Him who "liveth for ever and ever"

(Rev. 5:14), worship of Him "which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou has taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned" (Rev. 11:17), and worship of the One who is to receive "glory and honour and power" (Rev. 4:11).

In short, Revelation reveals what we have been looking at all quarter: that the Lord alone, our Creator, our Redeemer, our Judge—is worthy of our worship and praise.

Lesson 9 "Trust Not in Deceptive Words": The Prophets and Worship

This weeks memory text is taken from Isaiah 44:7     KJV and NIV provided by Biblegateway.org

....... This week, we will look at what a few prophets said about those who thought that their "worship" of the true God, in the true temple on the true Sabbath day, was all that mattered, regardless of how they lived the rest of the week. As the prophets show, this is a deception, a good way to "cook up all sorts of trouble for ourselves."

Conformity, Compromise, and Crisis in Worship Lesson 8

This weeks lesson we continue to look at the question of worship, we are going to look at a certain kind of evil that has brought devastating consequences to God’s people and to humanity in general. We can view what this evil did to ancient Israel, but we need to ask the important question about just how susceptible we are to it ourselves.

Lesson 4: Rejoicing Before the Lord: The Sanctuary and Worship

This weeks Memory Text:  Deuteronomy 12:12

This weeks story illustrates the danger of mere ritual. Worship needs to come from the heart, from the soul, from a true relationship with God. That is why this week we will look at the ancient Israelite sanctuary service, the center of Israelite worship, and derive what lessons we can from it about how we can have a deeper worship experience.

Lesson 2 Worship and the Exodus: Understanding Who God Is

This weeks memory text is taken from Exodus 20: 2-3
(Double click for link to biblegateway)

Taken from weekly lesson .........

In speaking to the woman at the well, Jesus said, " ‘You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews’ " (John 4:22, NKJV). Imagine, worshiping what you do not know. In a sense, that is what almost all the world has done, or perhaps is doing now—worshiping what they do not know. When you see someone bowing down and worshiping a block of stone, thinking it will answer their prayers, you are seeing people worshiping what they do not know. That is, they are worshiping what they think can bring them salvation but cannot. In a more modern context, people who make gods out of power, money, fame, and self are, likewise, worshiping what they do not know. They are worshiping that which cannot save them.

In the immediate Christian context, the question for us could be: do we know what we are worshiping? Do we know the Lord whom we praise and honor with our mouths? Who is He? What is His name? What is He like?

This week we will look at early accounts of the children of Israel and how their encounters with the Lord reveal to us more about the nature and the character of the God we profess to serve and worship. After all, what sense does it make to worship what we do not know?

Lesson 12 "More Clothing Imagery"

More Clothing Imagery  - Memory Verse: Mark 5:28

This week’s lesson will look at the question of clothing, all in the context of Jesus. We’ll explore the woman who believed, rightly so, that all she had to do was touch His clothes, and she would be healed. Then there’s Jesus, laying aside His garment in order to wash the feet of His disciples. Next we’ll look at the high priest who, standing before the Lord, rent his own garments in an act that sealed the haughty ruler’s doom. Then there’s Jesus in the garments of mockery, put on Him by the Roman soldiers. And finally, we’ll look at the soldiers casting lots for Christ’s garment, thus fulfilling an ancient prophecy. Just clothing, yes, yet full of symbolism and meaning, for sure. (Information taken from lesson 12 )

Lesson 11 "The Wedding Garment"

The Wedding Garment - Memory Text taken from Romans 8:1

Have you ever noticed that some of the meanest, nastiest, and most hateful people are professed Christians? Or that some of the most judgmental, condemnatory, hypocritical, and downright evil people are those who go to church, who claim the promises of salvation, and who profess assurance of salvation?  Think about Christian history. Think about all the horrible things done by professed Christians, and often in the name of Jesus too. Think how people have used their faith as cover, a cloak, a justification for some horrific crimes. How does this unfortunate fact help us better understand the need for the kind of separation among the professed followers of Jesus, as revealed in this parable and in other Bible texts? Join is this week as we look closer at this topic.   (Infomation taken from Lesson 11

Lesson 9 A Brand Plucked from the Fire

Though it is not good to dwell on our sins, at times we need to take a hard and honest look at ourselves (regardless of whether or not Satan is whispering in our ears). What changes must you immediately choose to make in your life, and what Bible promises can you claim in order to make those promises real and effective? Think of what’s at stake if you allow sin to dominate you.

Lesson 7 In the Shadow of His Wings

How readily do you acknowledge before God your own sin and wrongdoing? This week we will meditate with David through his psalms on how God shelters us and covers our sin. In this Quarter

A Thing Bigger Than Itself

We are awash in symbols. Our language, our words (hence our thoughts, even) are symbols, representations of things other than themselves. The letters of the word dog aren’t a dog or any dog. They’re a symbol, composed of type on a page, made of letters and sounds that, no matter how construed, never can be what they stand in for. The word dog, in every tongue and script, represents something bigger than itself.
Language, culture, society, politics—everything to some degree—comes to us filtered through symbols: flags, icons, pictures, slogans, idiom, art, poetry, sculpture, dance, architecture, ritual, and custom, with meanings often varying from place to place. So many things mean more than what they, in and of themselves, are.
Of course, the Bible is filled with symbols, too. We’re all familiar with, for example, the prophetic symbolism of Daniel: a winged lion (Dan. 7:4), a beast with iron teeth (Dan. 7:7), a goat that “touched not the ground” (Dan. 8:5), a statue with feet of iron and clay (Dan. 2:33). Again, all these are symbols of greater realities.
And the parables Jesus told? The lost sheep (Luke 15:1–6), the rich man burning in hell (Luke 16:22–31), the marriage supper (Matt. 22:1–13), and the ten virgins (Matt. 25:1–13) are all symbolic representations of concepts that, in their essence, have little or nothing to do with their symbols. (Christ came to give eternal life to a fallen race, not to find lost farm animals.)
This quarter’s lessons focus on biblical symbolism of a certain kind: clothing imagery. We will consider the garments that people in the Bible wore and what that clothing really meant, what truths it symbolized, what great realities it pointed to, and what lessons we can learn from it. From the fanciful adornment of Lucifer in heaven to the filthy rags of our own righteousness, from the coats of animal skins for Adam and Eve in Eden to the “garments of splendor” mentioned in Isaiah, the Bible uses clothing and clothing imagery to portray truths about sin, pride, righteousness, salvation, justification, resurrection, and eternal life in Christ.
